Green Island Western Food @ The One, Bayan Baru

Green Island western food restaurant has been opened for a year now, with them celebrating their 1 year anniversary in October. I've been to this restaurant a number of times now, and have been wanting to blog about it ever since.

They are located in the row of shop houses in Bayan Baru called The One. It's a two-storey shop house serving western food. Their food is very affordable and they probably serve one of the cheapest drinks in town! (for a restaurant). And to top it all off, their service is super quick! Definitely three thumbs up! :)

Menu

Cheap drinks :)
On top of their reasonably priced food items, they also offer Set Lunches.

Here's what we ordered...
Mushroom soup for only RM1 (as an add-on for their set lunch)

My White coffee (cold) was quite a big glass and it only cost RM2.50

As mentioned earlier, their drinks are quite value for money. The White coffee (cold) I ordered, only cost RM2.50 per glass and mind you, that was a reasonably big glass, with a medium amount of ice. Unlike most restaurants, which charge more, and give you even more ice than drink, this restaurant really serves cheap, money worthy drinks :)

Next-up, our mains...

Grilled Fish with mushroom sauce

Chicken with thai sauce (top left corner), Grilled fish with black pepper sauce (top right corner)

The fish that they serve is not the usual Dory fish. This place offers Tilapiah fish ie fresh water fish, which is something different.

The overall experience was ok. But I was impressed at the quick service and cheap drinks :)
What do you think? Let me know :)

Chips & Chops - Batu Lanchang

Holar! THis is another new western food outlet... and believe it or not, the owner also owns Salsa restaurant...   :)

This is a more modest western food outlet, whose prices are more pocket-friendly and economical.

The ambiance is modern chic...with portraits of famous artists hanging on the white walls

They also have an out-door area for smokers...

As mentioned, their prices are cheaper than the parent restaurant Salsa. Their set lunches are only RM10 nett!!!

We ordered two sets

The set was the beef spaghetti Bolognese... which came with soup and drink

And the chicken chop

The main thing about this restaurant is that it's prices are kept affordable and economical. They even have a card programme going-on, where for every set lunch you order, you get a stamp. After collecting 20 stamps, you get a free set lunch/dinner.

For me, I am a true Salsa fan. I prefer dining at Salsa Restaurant anyday :) It's the best so far...

Salsa Restaurant @ Gurney Paragon

New old restaurant! That's what I like to call it :)

Salsa restaurant has been around for a long long time. It started it's first shop at Hotel Continental, along Upper Penang Road.

Now, it has spread it's wings and opened a second outlet, bearing the same name, in the latest, most happening mall which just opened - Gurney Paragon

Take a look around the new place...

It's new premise is found next to the Padini outlet. I think it's on the second floor. It's located outside and there's a direct escalator & elevator leading to the restaurant. It faces Jalan Kelawai, by the way :)

I went there on the second day of it's opening... [pretty fast, eh :)] that was in July (30/7/2013)

So, as you can see, the new Salsa has maintained it's signature red accented walls... and the lovely picture paintings on the walls.

Now, to the menu...

Nice, clear pictures to introduce their foods... I believe the prices are the same as the restaurant along Penang Road. The only draw-back is that they do not serve their famous set lunches/ set dinners at the new outlet.

Those of you who, like myself, are a keen fan of their set lunches/set dinners, well, the good news is that they still offer the sets at their place at Penang Road. Just not the new one. Perhaps they will introduce it later? Fingers crossed.

Now to the food...

We ordered Lamb Shank and Beef Lasagne

Lamb shank - tender and delicious!
The lamb shank was so well done! We requested it to be extra tender and they did just that! So happy they complied to our request. It was simply delicious!
Really worth the money we paid for it...

Beef Lasagne
Mine was the beef lasagne... this was also a favourite! I like that the dish came with the side salad. A mixture of alfafa grass, lettuce, tomatoes and arugula... topped with balsamic vinegar...

I can safely say that their dishes are similar to the ones at the outlet in Hotel Continental - still as delicious, still as satisfying :)

Cassis @ Bellisa Row

Back in March, specifically, 3rd March 2013, I was invited to a talk which was held at Cassis, locating along Bellisa Row in Pulau Tikus.
It was a wine and dine session as well.

Below's the Menu for that evening

The 1st course was Smoked duck salad with orange segments, candied pecan, and sherry vinaigrette. Sorry no pic for the salad... I was abit self conscious to snap pictures in the beginning...

The 2nd course was pumpkin soup. This was thick and hot and yummy...

The 3rd course was chicken thigh - with cheese, watercress, grape and port wine reduction. I liked this dish very much! Loved the idea of combining all flavours with grape too

The 4th course was the mains... we had a choice of seabass or steak. I chose the fish

Portion was small. The fish was abit too salty for my liking. The whole dinner took too long to come. I suppose they were having trouble keeping-up with serving for a large group of 20 plus people.
Perhaps dining there not in a huge group, would be better??

Oh, they served us either white or red wine. Since I knew I was going to have the seabass, I chose white wine... but white was is always sour.... in general...

The 5th course was dessert! Crème bruleé...

This too, took some time to come... by the time we all had finished, it was time to go home...

All in all, a good experience :)

1881 Chong Tian Cultural Hotel & Restaurant

1881 Chong Tian Cultural Hotel & Restaurant located along Rope Walk or also known as Jalan Pinta Tali.

It boasts to be the first and so far the only Chinese Heritage hotel in Malaysia. This taken from their website at http://www.1881chongtian.com/

We visited this place for lunch. And we were amazed by the decor of this hotel & restaurant.

I must warn you, this post will be heavily loaded with lots of pics.

The interior itself was so beautiful with many wooden carving and old artifacts filled reminisent of Chinese culture and tradision. It's a very good place to bring tourists and visitors from out of town.

Next-up is the food. They serve both Chinese and Western cuisine here. We ordered from both set of menus and this is what we chose - two ala chart dishes with rice.
1) claypot taufu with seafood
2) honey glazed roasted chicken

The chicken was very nicely prepared - marinated and glazed well with honey.
The seafood taufu saw kept warm with a burning flame. I think they hand-make their own taufu. This dish was satisfying.

Next-up, the western menu.
We ordered one set lunch.
This set consist of one soup, one glass ice lemon tea, one main course, dessert and coffee/tea.
The choice of our main course was chicken chop for RM22.
(Different main courses had different pricing... )
Mushroom soup with croutons

Chicken chop with gravy on the side

Coffee and dessert
We went close to 2pm and by that time, most people had already finished lunch. If I was not mistaken, the previous people had desserts different from the one I got. I think the others had pudding in a nice tall glass for their dessert. So, I was suprised when mine came in a plate. It was a morsel of cheese cake the size of a 50cent coin (or maybe smaller) with cream on the side. Correct me if I'm wrong on this one. I didn't have another table to compare the dessert... so, the dessert part was abit disappointing for me.

Anyway, this was a nice place to visit... besides the food :))
